What is sliding window protocol?

Explanation

  • In sliding window protocol, multiple frames are sent by transmitter at a time before needing an acknowledgement from receiver.
  • Sliding window refers an imaginary boxes that hold the frames on both sender and receiver side. It gives the upper limit on the number of frames that can be transmitted. Frames may be acknowledged by a receiver at any point. It does not take care whether window is full or not on receiver side.
  • The window size is n – 1, where n is the number of frames. If there are 8 frames then window size will be 8 – 1 = 7. It means maximum of n – 1 frame can be sent before an acknowledgement. Sliding window is at both sender and receiver side. It gets shifted as data is transmitted or acknowledgement is received.
