Question 3

Short Answer▾

What is the advantage of ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) over modem? (2004)

  • It has normal uplink band width but higher down link bandwidth. Asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) is a new modem technology thatconverts existing twisted-pair telephone lines into access paths for high-speed communications.
  • This technology works by using frequencies that are not used by a voice telephone call. The benefits of using this type of internet connection are numerous, but include the ability for a user to use their telephone line for voice, as well as data at the same time.
  • As the ADSL uses the existing copper wire structure, it can be installed almost anywhere. The ADSL is faster than other remote access technologies such as analogue modems, ISDN, cable modems, or wireless solutions. DSL is cost-effective to implement and to manage with little to no maintenance involved.

Question 4

Which of the following are the aadvantages of digital over analog signal? (2004)

Choice (4)

Efficient transmission

Data security and integrity

Noise immunity

All a., b. and c. are correct

Advantages of digital signal over analog signal are listed below.

  • Digital signals do not get corrupted by noise etc. You are sending a series of numbers that represent the signal of interest (i.e.. audio, video etc.)
  • Digital signals typically use less bandwidth. This is just another way to say you can cram more information (audio, video) into the same space.
  • Digital can be encrypted so that only the intended receiver can decode it (like pay per view video, secure telephone etc.)
  • Enables transmission of signals over a long distance.
  • Transmission is at a higher rate and with a wider broadband width.
  • It is more secure.
  • It is also easier to translate human audio and video signals and other messages into machine language.
  • There is minimal electromagnetic interference in digital technology.
  • It enables multi-directional transmission simultaneously.
