What is sliding window?

  • Sliding window defines the range of sequence numbers need to be tracked by sender and receiver. Thus they need to deal with only part of the possible sequence numbers.

  • In sliding window technique, each data packet (for most data link layers) and byte (in TCP) includes a unique consecutive sequence number used by the receiving computer to place data in the correct order. Use of sequence numbers avoids duplicate data.

  • It is used for controlling transmitted data packets where reliable and sequential delivery is required, such as in Data Link Layer (OSI model) or Transmission Control Protocol (TCP).

  • Sliding window is also known as windowing.

Which layers are user support layers?

User support layers are:

  • Session layer

    • Session Layer manages events that initiate and tear down network connections.

    • Supports multiple types of connections created dynamically and run over individual networks.

  • Presentation layer

Presentation layer is the simplest- handles syntax processing of data such as format conversions and encryption/decryption for application layer.

  • Application layer

    • Supplies network services to end-user applications- typically protocols on user’s data.

    • For example, in web browser, the application layer protocol “HTTP” packages the data to send and receive web page content.
