What is Bandwidth?

Explanation

  • Every medium has an upper limit and lower limit on the frequency of signals. This range is called the bandwidth. Another definition of bandwidth is the capacity of network communications link to transmit data from one point to another. In short bandwidth describes the data transfer rate.
  • Note that bandwidth is not a measure of network speed.
  • Bandwidth is expressed in bits per second (bps) , megabits per second (Mbps) , or gigabits per second (Gbps) .
  • Bandwidth can be symmetrical that is data capacity is same in both directions, or asymmetrical, which means download and upload capacity are not equal.
  • In asymmetrical connections, upload capacity is typically smaller than download capacity.
