What are the different link types used to build a computer network?

Explanation

  1. Cables

    These connect nodes in the same room, building, or even the same site (e. g. campus) using a piece of cable that physically strings between the nodes.

  2. Leased Lines

    Connects two nodes across large distances- on opposite sides of the country, or even across continents.

  3. Last-Mile Links

    “Last-mile” links are less expensive than leased lines- only span the last mile from network service provider.

What is NETBIOS and NETBEUI?

Explanation

NETBIOS:-

  • NETBIOS programming interface allows I/O requests to be sent to and received from a remote computer hiding the networking hardware from applications.
  • Sets up and maintains connections.
  • Is a non-routable protocol.
  • Uses broadcasts to spread information about servers.
  • Supports 3 services:
    • Session service: Connection oriented protocol (peer-to-peer and client/server) .
    • Datagram service: Used to deliver broadcasts and is thus connectionless.
    • Name service: Which does away with need to run central name servers

NETBEUI:-

  • NetBEUI (NetBIOS Extended User Interface) is new, extension of NetBIOS.
  • Formalizes frame format not specified as part of NetBIOS.
  • Developed by IBM for its LAN Manager product and was adopted by Microsoft for its Windows NT, LAN Manager, and Windows for Workgroups products.
