What is sliding window?

Explanation

  • Sliding window defines the range of sequence numbers need to be tracked by sender and receiver. Thus they need to deal with only part of the possible sequence numbers.
  • In sliding window technique, each data packet (for most data link layers) and byte (in TCP) includes a unique consecutive sequence number used by the receiving computer to place data in the correct order. Use of sequence numbers avoids duplicate data.
  • It is used for controlling transmitted data packets where reliable and sequential delivery is required, such as in Data Link Layer (OSI model) or Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) .
  • Sliding window is also known as windowing.
